About Gerber: A History of Innovation Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that have contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939. It makes sense, really. An idea man gets the idea of a lifetime and turns it into a major outdoor brand--one that commands respect among knife lovers and knife makers alike. And now that same high regard is spreading in new directions, in the form of many outstanding products such as tools, personal L.E.D. lighting, and more. Unusually poor quality for Gerber. September 5, 2010 J. King (Pennsylvania) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The first time I put this brand new shovel to work it was broken before I finished putting up my tent. Yes, digging out a couple small, rough rocks and pounding in tent stakes was too much for it to handle. Somewhere in its normal use, the main nut jumped its threads and got bound up. When I got back from my weekend trip I put some tools and leverage to the nut, but could not free it up. It is now a shovel that will not fold.
Gerber shovel September 3, 2010 Michael Halden This shovel has gotten me out of a lot of binds. I like keeping it in my truck because I never know when I can use it. I like helping people out. I have helped get cars from being stuck on rocks in campgrounds, cars being stuck in the snow, and other stuff too. Wearing this on your belt is not practical. It is a great shovel for the price - something I plan to keep with me at all times. This "shovel" is extremely compact, great for those with limited space. But, if you expect to do much digging with the tool you had better look elsewhere. If you are looking for an emergency shovel for emergency situations, then this is for you. I bought it because of limited space in my Explorer and although I would have preferred something a little bigger, this is close to what I was looking for. It is well-make, and very sturdy. It does have some weight to it for its size, so if you are backpacking you may want to look elsewhere.
Pretty good August 30, 2010 tela (UT, USA) It's easy to say the shovel is perfect before using it in the real world, and I probably would have.
But after using it on a beach camping trip, I can't say it is perfect. First off, there are three different mechanisms in this shovel. The first is the telescoping handle. The second is the rotating shovel head. The third is the threaded lock so the shovel stays firm. All of these mechanisms work well if the shovel is clean, but after being used in a sandy condition, they deteriorate quickly.
The telescoping action grinds and is difficult to move. The other mechanisms have similar problems and there is no easy way of cleaning them out. Even after washing them out with water there is still grinding, and the shovel isn't meant to be disassembled. Maybe the tolerances are just a little too tight in this shovel.
The other thing that maybe is more annoying is the paint has already come off of the head of the shovel. This is just one weekend in sand, and it wasn't used in rocks or anything hard.
I still think it is a good shovel, but a simpler shovel might be in order for sandy situations.

I read other reviews of this product and was excited to purchase it. What a piece of junk! It arrived already rusted from the interior bolts, the bolt that allows it to collapse was barely rotating around the threads and the teeth were fragile enough to break off in my garden dirt. It was complete junk.
For camping August 18, 2010 J. Tsai (Bellevue, WA) Handy mini-shovel for camping and backpacking. Very good quality for a great price. The back of the shovel also has a flat spot for pounding stakes. Comes in a handy bag. Would definitely purchase again.
