Product Description
Witness one of nature's most spectacular transformations up close with this reusable, collapsible habitat. Fine, transparent mesh lets you see butterfly metamorphosis up close. Product includes easy-to-use feeder and complete instructions for habitat. Butterfly larvae with food shipped directly to your home. The habitat collapses for storage when not in use. You can adopt and raise a handful of caterpillars, watch them transform into painted lady butterflies, then lift the garden cover to release your beautiful specimens into the wild. This exciting habitat makes a fabulous introduction to the miracles of nature. The larvae and food available round the year.

Editorial Review
Did you know that painted ladies (the butterflies, that is) taste with their feet and have 10,000 eyes? You and your kids will be fascinated by all you learn about these beautiful creatures with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes about three weeks from when you receive the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container with all the nutrients they need). Your children can watch the larvae increase dramatically in size, form chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it's suggested that they release the butterflies after a few days of observation). This would make a wonderful activity for families with kids of any age, but younger children will need help assembling the observation chamber and reading the instruction booklet. (Note: The manufacturer recommends that butterflies should not be set free in temperatures lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.) --Rachel Radway

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Gift for Kids!   September 3, 2010
Steven Gargolinski (Boston)
This Butterfly Garden is the perfect gift for children: potentially educational, fun, easy to take care of, and also interesting for any adults around. I've bought a few of these for younger relatives, and the reviews have always come back positive! This is a FANTSTIC birthday/Christmas/etc. gift if you have young kids to buy a present for.

4 out of 5 stars You get what's advertised.   August 28, 2010

My daughter enjoyed this toy. The net can be used again so you only have to buy the caterpillars.

5 out of 5 stars Great learning   August 25, 2010

I think my husband and I were just as excited as my daughter to check on our caterpillars every morning! The chrysallis stage kind of bored my daughter after a week but she is 3 so thast's a given. GREAT product that I would highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars 3.00 processing fee?!   August 22, 2010
Margaret A. Collrin (Royal Oak, Michigan United States)
I bought for my grandson's birthday and was very disappointed find the certificate required another 15.00 to be sent in! I understood the cost of the larvae would be covered. I have done this project with students and it is a wonderful experience but I think this particular kit is misleading.

5 out of 5 stars A great learning experience.   August 22, 2010

We bought this for my 7 year old daughter after seeing a similar product in a major retailer; and I can't recomend it enough for anyone who's kids (or parents, aunts, uncles, etc) are curious about where those colorful butterflies come from every summer.
The kit says that at least 3 of the 5 larvae will survive to become butterflies, we had all 5 survive.
My daughter loved every stage; from watching the larvae grow (very quickly) into caterpillars and become crysalids (not cocoons daddy! Moths come from cocoons!" my daughter corrected me more than once)and then creating her own environment for her butterflies.
When it came time to release them they actually stayed in our yard for a few days (nothing cuter than watching a little girl talk to her butterfly friends about life outside.)
Again; can't recomend this enough.
